They’ve been there so long that Jack, the son, has never lived anyplace else. We now have a trailer to show us what this movie is going to look like, and it appears to be much more hopeful than the depressing synopsis implies.
Brie Larson stars as the mother, known simply as "Ma." Jacob Tremblay plays her son, Jack. While there does appear to be an element of thriller in the film, we don’t know who has been keeping them hostage, or for what reason, though the trailer gives away the fact that they eventually do escape. So the imprisonment does not appear to really be the point of the movie. Instead, for a child that has never been outside "Room" the real struggle may be dealing chinese drama online with a world the kid has never experienced. This look gives their home proper noun status, almost like it’s alive.
It’s a remarkable concept for a story, experiencing the world for the first time all at once, rather than growing up in it. Room promises a range of emotions. If you’re the type that easily has tearful reactions in movies you may want to bring a few tissues to this one, it promises to do some serious tugging on the heartstrings.
In addition to Larson and Tremblay, William H. Macy and Joan Allen play the child’s grandparents. Interestingly, they are, like Ma, only billed as Grandma and Grandpa. It’s intriguing how few of the characters actually have names, just familial titles. It makes it even more clear that Room is a film about the coming of age of a child, whose age is somewhat stunted due to imprisonment.
Larson, has been in the middle of a meteoric korean drama online rise in Hollywood of late. After coming close to snagging the Sarah Connor role in Terminator: Genisys, she was just cast opposite Tom Hiddleston in King Kong’s return to big screen Kong: Skull Island. She was most recently seen in Amy Schumer’s comedy Trainwreck.
While she’s been setting herself up for box office success, Room looks to be much more the kind of movie that awards season loves. Both Larson and asian drama Tremblay have potential for recognition. With its mid-October release date, it’s being put right in that window for the various end of year awards to notice. We’re looking forward to seeing more of Room as we get closer to its release.
